Mini-abdominoplasy is performed when there is excess skin localized to the lower area of the abdomen. This is often seen following pregnancy when the skin of the lower tummy simply cannot contract back to its pre-pregnancy form. Loose skin develops in this region that does not improve with either diet or exercise. While there may be some excess fat as well, this procedure is most often performed when the problem is primarily excess skin.
Mini-abdominoplasty is performed under a light general anesthetic on an outpatient basis and typically takes 1 ½ to 2 hours. Through a relatively short incision in the lower abdomen, the lower abdominal skin is undermined to a level above the umbilicus on each side. The umbilicus is not touched however and there are no incisions in this area. If the underlying muscles are loose or separated (diastasis), they are tightened at this time with sutures. The excess skin is pulled gently downwards and the amount to be removed determined. A small drain is inserted and the incision is then closed. A light dressing is applied and a compression garment fitted to apply light pressure during the healing period.
